LABIAL MELANOTIC MACULE

The labial melanotic macule (LMM) is a common large "freckle" on the lower lip.

Clinical

A pigmented macule on the lower lip is seen. This large "freckle" or lentigo is caused by chronic sun exposure.

Treatment

Most lesions can be frozen. If lesion is gone leaving normal skin in 2-3 weeks, no more treatment need be done other than daily sunscreen/lip balm. If the lesion persists, is recurrent, or is irregular in shape and/or color, a biopsy should be done to exclude malignancy. Laser therapy can also be performed.
