The ecclipse nevus is very common in the scalp of children.
The Ecclipse Nevus (EN), aka Nevus en Cockarde, is a mole whose edges are darker than the center. It is benign and very common in the scalp of children.
A round or oval nevus, with a darker periphery, like a ring is characteristic. The scalp is the most common site. Children, especially boys are most commonly affected. Discrimination from melanoma is important. Dermoscopy may be helpful. Bear in mind that the incidence of melanoma in children is exceedingly low.
No treatment is needed. As always, patients and parents should be educated about the ABCDE's of melanoma and any suspicious lesions biopsied.
