A cutaneous horn with an underlying squamous cell carcinoma.

CUTANEOUS HORN

A cutaneous horn (CH) is formed by a conical projection of keratin. At the base, one may find an actinic keratosis, keratoacanthoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, verruca or seborrheic keratosis.

Clinical

A conical hyperkeratotic projection rising up from the skin is seen. At the base, a more fleshy papulonodule is typical. Giant forms may occur.

Treatment

Usually, a broad, deep shave biopsy along with curettage and electrodessication of the base is performed. The specimen should be sent to path to rule out underlying malignancy.
