BLUE NEVUS

The blue nevus (BN) is a common, melanocytic proliferation in the dermis. The deeper location is the reason for the typical blue color (Tyndall effect).

Clinical

A blue papule 2-6 mm in diameter on the scalp, face, dorsa of the hands or feet, or on the buttocks is characteristic. It may be present from birth or acquired later in life.

Treatment

Blue nevi are benign. However, very rarely, melanoma may develop. Thus, the patient should be instructed to seek immediate medical attention if there is any sudden change or growth--as they would do for any other mole.

Surgical removal may be done for cosmetic reasons.
