Acatalasia is a rare disease in which patients lack the enzyme catalase. Catalase destroys hydrogen peroxide which is commonly produced by bacteria in the oral mucosa. When hydrogen peroxide is applied to the oral mucosa, the tissue darkens and is rapidly destroyed.

Oral ulceration and gangrene can occur.
